Class Exercise 2 – Examine Scott McCloud’s 6 catagories of panel-to-panel transitions

Transitions can be a funny thing. Here I am talking about transitions on sequential art when my life itself consists of fragmented episodes linked up with funny transitions, and sometimes ridiculous ones. Well, back on track, in this post, we will look into the transitions in sequential art, and Scott McCloud did a wonderful piece on transitions being the bridge for panels to formulate a narrative chain, particularly in sequential art. My point of view is that these transitions complement his take on the spaces in between the panels, which are also known as the ‘gutter’ which renders meaning to the whole frame. The six form of transitions are:

So what’s coming below will be my attempt to construct frames of 6 panels and each frame will showcase each of Scott McCloud’s inexact science of transitions. This will be the pool of panels that we will be working with:

  1. moment-to-moment (takes several frames for what action-to-action can do in 2 frames]
  2. action-to-action (progression with actions)
  3. subject-to-subject (staying within a scene or idea)
  4. scene-to-scene (time and space are spanned)
  5. aspect-to-aspect (takes on a idea, mood, place. In this instance- the aspect focused on is time)
  6. non-sequitur [serving no logical relationship purpose, but narrative capacity is debatable]

Well, transition makes a story or narrative flow, the different techniques rendered here shows us how sequential art is a topic worth investigating and the depth of knowledge that it brings forth is indeed refreshing. The possibilities are endless! What intrigues me is how i think we can apply this to other fields of art and design such as narrative illustration, photography, painting, to name a field.

P.S If my life were to be mapped on such transitions, i think it will be a somnambulistic journey of non-sequitur frames 🙂
